چکیده
Di Genova, Genoa, Italy. Background: The airways and the upper digestive tract have a common embrional origin, and in sensitized subjects they can respond to allergens with an immediate reaction (asthma, rhinitis or oral allergy syndrome). We investigated the possible functional connection between respiratory tract and upper digestive tract by means of specific oral allergen challenges. Methods: Patients sensitized to birch and apple were subdivided in GROUP A (N 1⁄4 12; asthma and rhinitis due to birch and OAS due to apple) GROUP B (N 1⁄4 10; OAS due to apple without asthma/rhinitis); GROUP C (N 1⁄4 8; asthma and rhinitis due to birch without OAS). Healthy subjects represented the control group D (N 1⁄4 6). Oral provocation test with apple was performed out of the pollen season. Visual analog scale for eye, nose and mouth symptoms, spirometry, nasal eosinophil count and exhaled nitric oxide were assessed before and 6 hours after challenge. Results: There was no change in nasal and ocular symptoms before versus after challenge in all groups. On the contrary, in groups A and B the oral scores significantly increased after challenge (P , .001), whereas no change was seen in groups C and D. Exhaled nitric oxide and nasal eosinophils showed no change before versus after challenge in all groups. Nitric oxide was higher before and after challenge in groups A and C versus groups B and D. No change was een as well in forced vital capacity and forced expiratory volume in one second. Conclusions: In the case of birch-apple syndrome, eating apple does not functionally or clinically affect the respiratory tract.

Survey on the Prevalence of Allergic Rhinitis and its Effect on the Quality of High School Students’ Life
Introduction: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a common airway disease. In order to study the prevalence of AR in high school students in Kerman, the Score for Allergic Rhinitis (SFAR) was used and the quality of life in the students affected by rhinitis was evaluated using the SF-36 questionnaire. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional, analytical, descriptive study, based o...

Introduction: There is no single test as a gold standard for the diagnosis of allergic rhinitis (AR). The aim of this study was to assess the usefulness and validity of nasal smear as a quick, easy and inexpensive diagnostic method for diagnosis of allergic rhinitis. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted in a university hospital setting. Nasal smears were taken from 39 patients wit...
متن کاملInvestigating the frequency of adenoid hypertrophy and allergic rhinitis in children with mouth breathing complaints
Background and Objectives: Nocturnal snoring and open mouth breathing in children is one of the common causes of referrals to pediatricians. The two most common reasons of this problem are adenotonsillar hypertrophy and allergic rhinitis. Based on the findings, there is still no significant relationship between these two diseases. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the frequency ...
متن کاملDecreased serum level of lipoxin A4 (LXA4) may contribute to the pathogenesis of allergic rhinitis
Background: Rhinitis is a prevalent chronic inflammatory disease of the nasal mucosa. Arachidonic acid-derived lipoxin A4 (LXA4) has long been recognized to exert crucial anti-inflammatory and pro-resolving effects on inflammatory responses through a specific receptor named formyl peptide receptor-2 (FPR2). This study aimed to determine the serum level of LXA4 as well as the relative mRNA expre...

Background: Allergic rhinitis is one of the most common forms of allergic disorders affecting children. The prevalence rate of allergic rhinitis differs among countries and even among regions within the same country. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of childhood allergic rhinitis and the presence and significance of eosinophilia in nasal secretions. Method: 4584 children aged 11-15 y...
متن کاملSerum Level of Selenium, IL-4, IL-10 & IFN-g in Patients with Allergic Asthma, Allergic Rhinitis and Healthy Controls
Background: Allergic diseases have increased during the past decade worldwide. Th2 type lymphocyte response is known to play an important role in the process of allergic inflammation. IL-4, a mediator of type II cytokine response increases IgE synthesis and Interferon gamma, a cytokine of type I response interferes with IL-4 and inhibits IgE production. Selenium is an essential component of glu...
